  1. AMOS Mailing List FAQ

  4.             Part I  RULES OF THE MAILING LIST

  6. 1.    To SUBSCRIBE, go to http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/amos-list
  7.     Become a registered user of ONEList (it is free) and then you can
  8.     be added to the list.
  9.  
  10.     To UNSUBSCRIBE, go to http://www.onelist.com and click User Info.
  11.     Log in as a registered user (you have to be registered to SUBSCRIBE)
  12.     then click the UNSUBSCRIBE button next to amos-list.  You may also
  13.     change to digest format here.
  14.  
  15. 2.    If you want to distribute a file:
  16.     a)    upload it to Aminet and post an announcement to the
  17.         list
  18.     b)    email it to me and I will upload it to Aminet
  19.     c)    post a message to the list asking who wants it mailed to them
  20.         and then mail it to those who give permission
  21.  
  22. 3.    Arguments over anything should be done via private email.
  23.  
  24. 4.    If a message to you is returned undeliverable, I will check the reason
  25.     why and then decide if I should delete you from the list.  So, if you
  26.     do not get messages for 2 days in a row, email me and I will let you
  27.     know what has happened.

  29. 5.    No messages about pirating, removing protection from demos, etc.  I
  30.     don't have time to be a policeman, so let's try to be self-policing!

  34.     Part II        COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT AMOS

  36. 1)  What is AMOS?
  37.     AMOS is a BASIC language.  It has many more commands than AmigaBASIC
  38. and can let you do more powerful things so it is a Superset of BASIC.  If you
  39. can program in BASIC, you can code in AMOS.  I think AMOS stands for AMiga
  40. Operating System but do not quote me on it!
  41.     AMOS is an interpreted language but you can buy the Compiler for it
  42. which will let you compile your programs into an AmigaDOS executable.  Then
  43. you can distribute your program without its source.  Obviously, compiled
  44. programs are much faster.  If you do not want to pay for the Compiler you can
  45. still distribute your programs using a runtime version of AMOS called RAMOS.

  48. 2)  What is AMOS Pro and Easy AMOS?
  49.     Well, first a bit  of history.  AMOS The Creator (AMOS) came first.
  50. Then, Easy AMOS was developed.  Finally, less than a year ago (Oct 1992)
  51. AMOS Professional (Pro) was released.
  52.     AMOS The Creator was first designed to be like the Atari's STOS but
  53. when Lionet saw how the Amiga was more powerful than the Atari he revamped it
  54. and made it a pure Amiga product.  In the beginning AMOS and the manual were
  55. rough and found it hard to get along with all Amigas.  However, due to the
  56. policy of free updates, AMOS is much more friendly to the AmigaOS.  The manual
  57. has not been updated so do not be surprised to find 'undocumented' commands and
  58. features.
  59.     Easy AMOS was designed to help introduce beginner programmers to AMOS
  60. and programming.  A few commands were removed from AMOS and a better user
  61. interface was created to make the environment as friendly as possible.  Also,
  62. the manual was designed with the beginner in mind and is more of a tutorial
  63. than a reference manual.
  64.     AMOS Professional was designed with the professional coder in mind.
  65. The environment was revamped and made even better than Easy AMOS.  It has a
  66. cleaner look with a better editor.  Also, many new commands were added, making
  67. it the most complex of the 3.  For those who have been with AMOS since its
  68. Creator days, you will know that Pro is much more friendlier to the AmigaOS
  69. and to machines with differing configurations.

  71. NOTE: Europress *AND* Francois Lionet have dropped all support for AMOS at this
  72. time.  AMOS Pro was on a coverdisk.  Source code was released to a
  73. small group for updating/fixing.  Post to the list for more information.

  75. 3)  What is the latest versions?
  76.     As of May 1, 1996, they are:

  83. 4)  Where can I get the updates?
  84.     There are many ways:
  85.         A)    If you do not have FTP access, I can uuencode it and
  86.             email it to you
  87.         B)    If you live in the USA, you can send me a disk and one
  88.             32 cent stamp for return postage and I will snail mail
  89.             it to you.  Email me for my Snail Mail address.

  91. If anyone knows of any other ways, please let me know so I can add it to the
  92. list.

  94. To update to AMOS Pro v2.0, you must buy the Pro Compiler.  I have not seen or
  95. heard of any other way, so please correct me if I am wrong.
